The ultimate boxing stance & technique checklist

BOXING STANCE & TECHNIQUE CHECKLIST

POSTURE & HEAD POSITION 

  • Chin tucked into chest
  • Eyes looking through the eyebrows
  • Look at your opponent’s chest, not their hands
  • Head centered between your knees
  • Back straight, not hunched

 

HAND & ARM POSITION

  • Hands protecting your jaw without blocking your vision
  • Elbows protecting your ribs
  • Keep at least one hand at your face at all times
  • Back straight, not hunched

 

LOWER BODY & BALANCE 

  • Knees slightly bent
  • Heels off the ground
  • Feet shoulder-width apart
  • Back toe lined up with the lead heel
  • Lead toe pointed at your opponent
  • Rear toe at a 45-degree angle (orthodox stance)
  • Keep at least one foot planted while pivoting

 

MOVEMENT & FOOTWORK 

  • Don’t cross your feet when circling out
  • Move your head off the centerline with every punch
  • Lower your level when throwing body shots

 

PUNCHING MECHANICS

  • Thumb facing up on hooks
  • Thumb facing sideways on straights & uppercuts
  • Pivot your feet with every punch except the jab
